To Islanders, it won’t be surprising that this all started on Chappaquiddick in the late 90s. Brad Woodger wanted a product to deal with both private properties and a golf course that was literally plagued by mosquitoes, practically chasing people off the greens. Brad had been using Malathion to deal with the persistent problem, but discontinued it both because of concerns over the chemical as well as its wide, undiscriminating application.
What was needed was a product that would break down readily, thereby minimizing any environmental harm and could be applied to specific areas. He found Waldon Mosquito Control, which used Permithrin. Made from chrysanthemum, Permithrin was much gentler and, more importantly, applied by a trained landscaper using a backpack spraying device, it was easy to do targeted spraying.
Fast forward, Waldon sold their Island business to Brad in 2006 and he continued to service both the golf course and private homeowners as Chappy Mosquito Control. Clients were thrilled, business was strong, but in 2011, Brad searched for the right buyer. His standards were high: someone who shared the same commitment to environmental standards and would provide homeowners with a high level of service. Working Earth was the natural choice.
“I’ve always found Jude and Andrew to be accessible, friendly, professional and highly competent,” he said. “They are meticulous, responsive and conscientious — qualities needed in applying this safe, synthetic product and giving people terrific service.”
